Oct 05 2008 AM Worship Sermon Storing up Treasure (Matthew 6:19-24) Paul Stith

Sermon Outline

Storing up Treasure
Matthew 6:19-24

1. There are two kinds of treasure, but only one is lasting.

“The man or woman who is truly heavenly-minded is the one who brings the atmosphere of heaven down to earth and lives a life of practical holiness. Having treasure in heaven, such a person is delivered from grasping and maintaining his status in this world. He alone is really free to serve others.” [Sinclair Ferguson, The Sermon on the Mount, p. 138]

2. There are two treasures but only one is beneficial to us. 22-23

3. There are two masters, but only one is worth serving. 24

“So anybody who divides his allegiance tbetween God and mammon has already given it to mammon, since God can be served only with an entire and exclusive devotion.” [Johnt Stott, The Message of the Sermon on the Mount, p. 158]

Is 42:8 I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.

Is 48:11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name [2] be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.

Real treasure cannot be taken away, so we do not have to be anxious.
