Hurricane Disaster Relief
We encourage everyone to widen your hearts toward the victims of Katrina by praying and helping in tangible ways.
Donations
At present, we have heard from many quarters that the best help you can give is financial. Here are some ministries
that the leadership of GHC has confidence in and encourages you to consider
donating to:
- First Baptist Church, Clinton, Louisiana is well situated to help. They are a sister church about 1.5 hours from Slidell. Pastor Fred Malone is a trusted brother. Giving can be done online via Founders Ministries. More details are available at the link above.
- The Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Missions Board has a Disaster Relief section on the website. There you will find several ministry avenues for disbursing relief through Southern Baptist churches and affiliations.
- Desire Street Fellowship and Desire Street Ministries are located in New Orleans. Pastor Mo Leverett and his wife moved into the Desire neighborhood and founded DSM in 1990, a time when the Desire project was ranked the worst in the country. The ministry has planted a church, Desire Street Fellowship and a school, Desire Street Academy. In the wake of the hurricane, the staff has been scattered taking with them many of the 200 boys from the school. For the time being they are planning to set up a temporary school in Atlanta. They tell us, “Our greatest immediate needs are for prayers and funding.”
Other Opportunities
- Prepare a guest room: HSLDA will pair homeschooling hosts with homeschoooing families based on the criteria you specify. Contact Stan Reeves for more details.
- Prepare for a work trip to the area: Although it is not the time now, our prayer is to send some to the disaster area to assist in the rebuilding efforts for the glory of Christ.
- Work with First Baptist Opelika and the Red Cross: Many evacuees are being housed at the church, and volunteers are welcome to drop in and help in a number of ways.
- Give blood: There is a great need for blood, which was already in short supply before the hurricane. The Lee County Chapter of the American Red Cross has a blood drive every Wed. 12-6 at their office. Email info@leeredcross.org or call 334-749-9981 for details.
- Give goods: Parkway Baptist Church is asking for donations of supplies to fill up two 18-wheelers that will be driven to areas of need when they're full.
Note: A few of the details were supplied for us by the information page at
